Queer Stories and Videogames: About the Blogger

Nix Pendergast uses he/him/they/them pronouns and has a Bachelor’s in Digital Technology and Creative Culture with a minor in Fine Arts and a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Washington State University.

Nix’s interest in media started when he was a kid and watched The Pixar Story and thought “that’s what I want to do!” At the time, it was mostly because the documentary showed adults riding scooters around their workplace. Since he watched that documentary, he has found interactive media and become more interested in storytelling and the different mediums artists can use to tell stories through interactive media.

Something that really jump-started his need to create is the concept of LGBTQ+ representation in media, specifically video games. The first LGBTQ+ characters to catch his eye were Dorian Pavus and Sera from the game Dragon Age: Inquisition. They’re both openly gay characters and that was the first time he saw it in a video game. It was also the first time where he saw a game where you can play through a romance with a same sex character. Dragon Age had this ability in its prior games, but he found Inquisition first.

Nix has a particular interest in the concept of semiotics, the study of how we assign the meaning of signs, and how it relates to self-expression. His interest in the subject began with finding Hal Fischer’s photography exhibition “Gay Semiotics,” which portrayed the culture and nonverbal communications of the 1970s Castro District of San Francisco, California. He believes that Fischer provides a great framework to document the visual signs of any individual’s self-expression. He hopes to one day produce a modern tribute to Gay Semiotics, creating a visual portrayal of the current state of LGBTQ+ signs of self-expression.

There is currently a lot of LGBTQ+ centered media available (including Baldur’s Gate 3 which has consumed a good amount of his free time since it came out last August), and it is a career goal of his to help add to what’s already available. Video games are a medium that has since become a favorite of his, however more web-based media such as digital art, web comics, animatics, even fanfiction and fanart have always been some of his favorite forms of media.

Nix lives in Vancouver, Washington with his mom because she’s super nice and lets him live at home along with his older brother. He has a pit bull mix named Lily Lou, and a chinchilla named Pascal the Rascal. He spends a good amount of his day with his pets, not that he’s complaining. Currently he is doing housekeeping to pay his bills and is the consulting graphic and web designer for Wishbone Menagerie, a crochet boutique based in the Pike Place Market, Seattle, Washington.
