What is a Digital Product?
A digital product refers to any item delivered electronically to the buyer. This includes everything from the video game you purchased last month, which still sits untouched on your laptop, to your Netflix subscription.
While consuming digital products is something simple that we do every day, creating a digital product is a different story. Many of us may have no idea where to start, but a good place to start with anything is research.
Digital Product Research
When researching digital products, I specifically examined those within my skill set. This allows me to see what is currently available and determine how my own product will compete against its competitors, as well as plan for a product that is feasible for me to create, utilizing my abilities to their fullest potential.

For example, a product that caught my eye as a good digital product idea is a universal design brief. While UX designers created this, it was designed with the intention of allowing any designer to use it for a design brief. This is very useful, and I do have the skills to make something similar. However, I’m not particularly enthusiastic about the idea of creating a template. My design skills can be applied to create a wide range of other products.

A different digital item that caught my eye during my research is a digital zine being sold on Etsy called “Dressing Queer.” This zine showcases the experiences and anecdotes of queer individuals regarding their clothing choices and self-presentation. Commenters appreciated this aspect of the zine, which contributed to its success. A similar product is within my skill set to create. Still, I would prefer it to focus on my own subject matter, such as a zine discussing semiotics (the study of signs and how we assign meaning) and signification (the study of the relationship between a sign and its meaning), and their connection to LGBTQ+ identities. However, I recognize that this is a project that would take longer than I would like for my first digital product to be sold.

Another digital product I found interesting is a set of clip art dog resources for digital collages called “Muddy Paws Dog Clip Art.” Clip art is a digital image that is either raster-based (made up of pixels) or vector-based (made up of mathematical equations). They can be used as assets in the design of other products, such as greeting cards or graphical items. While I do not want to completely copy their idea by creating another dog clip art pack, I could develop a clip art pack of a different subject, such as my own version of a Pride-themed Clip art/Vector art pack. Or even a Moo Deng-themed Clip art/Vector art pack. Either of these options would be a very obtainable product for me to create.

A different type of digital product that caught my eye was mascot and character creator toolkits. For these, I found a few different approaches. One involved a selection of vector images that form the parts to make a mascot, such as with the Mascot Maker Mega Bundle.

A similar product is the Procreate Fantasy Men and Women Portraits, which are two separate toolkits for the drawing program Procreate that provide users with stamp brushes to create their desired fantasy character. For my own product, I would want to make a fantasy character creator, but I would opt for the vector image route rather than the brush route, as that more aligns with my skill set.
Final Thoughts
There are numerous digital products available, such as zines, clip art, and character toolkits, which are a few examples. While the ability to create each of these is within my skill set, certain ones are more appealing than others. The easiest product for me to develop would likely be the Pride-themed or Moo Deng-themed clip art ideas. However, I feel the most passionate about the semiotics, signification, and identity zine, but it may take too long to create and might be too niche to perform well. Alternatively, I think that the character creator would be feasible within a more acceptable timeframe.
