My name is Nix Pendergast and use he/him/they/them pronouns. I have a Bachelor’s in Digital Technology and Creative Culture from Washington State University, and I am currently a graduate student attending Quinnipiac University online. I am in the Masters in Interactive Media and Communications program, and this is my blog detailing my educational journey. I have a particular interest in the concept of semiotics (the study of signals and how we interpret them) in specific regards as to how semiotics applies to self-expression for the LGBTQ+ community.
In this program, I hope to take my research within the topic of semiotics further and to produce a photo series that portrays the many facets of nonverbal communication using physical signals within current LGBTQ+ culture. This project will be a tribute, and sort of continuation of photographer Hal Fischer’s photo series Gay Semiotics, which similarly portrayed the nonverbal communication of gay men of the San Francisco’s Castro in the 1970s.
